The will of God for us, and the purpose of His commandments, is that we would learn to live in His love. The greatest commandment is that we are to love God with all we are, all we do, and all we have, and in loving God, to love our neighbor as ourselves. But God knows we cannot give what we have not received. We are only able to love because He first loves us. And as we receive His life-giving, transforming love, that love is meant to overflow from us toward God and toward our neighbors.
