The fifth commandment directs our focus to God’s desire for the family. It is God’s will that one generation care for the other. Parents are to nurture and care for their children when they are young, and grown children are to honor and care for their parents in their later years. In this way, every generation may experience fullness of life in healthy community. But what happens when this ideal falls short? That’s where the Church, as our truest family in Christ, is meant to be God’s blessing for the nurture and flourishing of every generation.
