The Breastplate of Righteousness

Ephesians 6:10-20 (ESV)
The second piece of armor that is listed in Ephesians 6 is the Breastplate of Righteousness. In battle, the breastplate was used to protect the vital organs of the upper body such as the heart, lungs, and liver. It was understood that if one of these essential organs was damaged by the enemy, the warrior would be incapable of remaining in the battle. In Scripture, the first reference of a breastplate is not connected to war but worship. God commands that a breastplate of judgement be created for Aaron to wear before the Lord in his role as High Priest. The names of the twelve tribes of Israel were engraved on the stones that covered the front of the breastplate as a memorial before God. God’s love for His people and His righteous direction/judgement for their lives are beautifully expressed in the design and function of the breastplate.
